Fendi Unleashes Wooden Platform High Heels

By Hope Alexander – Source: Hub Pages We were warned about this. The sight that you see before you is not some sort of glossy flashback, nor is it intended in jest. No, those triple soled wooden platform shoes are from designer Fendi, and they’re on the catwalk this season. Really. Given it another couple [...]

Prada Spring 2011 Shoes

Miuccia Prada opted for bold, vibrant colors for  Prada’s spring/summer 2011 collection.  To match the upbeat blend of tango/ flamenco music from the runway, even prim and proper cutout lace up oxfords were taken to new heights with multi-colored, rubber-soled sneaker-like soles.  My favorite? I love the blue and white!!

In Her Shoes

December 30, 2010 Designer, Shoes 1 Comment

In 14 years, Tamara Mellon has transformed Jimmy Choo from a small, bespoke cobbler to a global brand estimated to be worth £ 500 million. Mellon started from the ground up, as a shopgirl at the department store, Browns. She had a privileged background – as the daughter of famous tycoon, Tommy Yeardye, Mellon grew up in Beverly Hills, studied at Swiss boarding schools, and followed her heart. ‘‘The Jimmy Choo success was built on hard work, innovation and determination, and ultimately on a woman’s love for shoes,’’ she clarifies.

With 100 stores in 32 countries, the gutsy 43-year-old certainly knows her business. And even if the media continues with its fascination for her celebrity boyfriends (actor Christian Slater was one), her legal issues with her mother or her deliciously free-spirited actions – the Terry Richardson photograph where she posed naked with a strategically placed kitten, is one of the first pictures you come across when you google Mellon she does not worry about what others think. Her daughter and Jimmy Choo are her life, she says. It is the business her father loaned her money to start. ‘‘My father was the most sound and wise person in my life. He was my advisor and my rock and always encouraged me to live my dreams and ‘to feel the fear.’

The making of Jimmy Choo

My vision for Jimmy Choo has always been to build a luxury lifestyle with shoes at the core. We continue to look at other complimentary categories but we do so with a certain discipline so that each builds upon the Jimmy Choo brand story. Inspiration for our collections doesn’t necessarily come from a place, an era or an outfit. I like to call it Zeitgeist – it is more of a mood, a general attitude; it is really a mix of what I have seen and how I feel and there is always the quintessential Jimmy Choo feminine and sensual spirit portrayed through the collection.

I think that my favourite period would have to be the 70s. I love the era for its fashion as well as interiors. I have always had a love for accessories, including vintage jewellery. I like to rework old pieces.

Nothing is sexier on a woman than self confidence. And a bit of sparkle can only make her feel even more dazzling.

The inspiration for Jimmy Choo’s Project Crystal (besides the traditional 15th anniversary gift of crystal and Mellon’s love for antique jewellery) comes from the signature jeweled shoes which helped make the brand famous on the red carpet. Also, technology and glamour inspired some of the crystal collection’s key pieces like Niagra and Montana.

They combine silver mesh fused in transparent Perspex, making this collection modern, edgy and yet feminine.

My personal favourite from the celebratory series is Marine, a gorgeously soft-strapped nappa leather shoe with 15 crystal discs rising in a geometric pattern, representing our 15th anniversary, wrapping the foot with long straps tied in bondage fashion. It’s glamorous with an edge. Next year, a new aspect of our collection offers for the first time driving shoes, espadrilles, and more biker boots (the brand launched glamourous trainers earlier this year). We just launched ‘The Choo Connection,’ which is a new interactive section of the Jimmy Choo website; a men’s shoe collection coming out in Autumn Winter 2011, and the Jimmy Choo spirit line. And this is just the beginning of our anniversary year; the best is yet to come.

Behind the empire

People ask me how I juggle between hard-nosed entrepreneur, mum and a sexy icon. You must remember your priorities. I am a mother first and foremost.

As jam-packed as my diary gets, I always make sure that I don’t travel too long without seeing my daughter, Minty (eight years old). She keeps things in perspective for me. But when I am in work mode, I always give it 100 per cent.

One of my key mottos is “feel the fear and do it anyway.” And this is how Jimmy Choo has achieved its success.

I have a huge amount of self determination and belief. I always trusted my instinct. (She recently said in an interview: ‘‘If a woman gets tough in negotiations, she’s difficult, whereas a man would be considered a brilliant businessman.’’) I try not to be in (the public eye) all the time. But only when it is proactive, to talk about the company and the charity projects we support.

I always knew I wanted to work in fashion, but it was whilst I was working as accessories editor at British Vogue that I identified the gap in the market; there was clearly a demand for distinct and stylish shoes that was not being fulfilled, so I approached Jimmy Choo (the bespoke cobbler) and founded the company in 1996. My own signature look is easy, glamorous and with edge.

My advice to fashion entrepreneurs is to be strong in your message to highlight what sets you apart. And never give up.

I am an impulsive shopper. My guilty pleasure is net-a-porter.com. I always start with one item in my basket and end up with far too many! I actually archive all my shoes, bags and key outfits for my daughter, Minty.

(Mellon reportedly owns over 1,000 pairs of Jimmy Choos). I am super organised and with my busy lifestyle, everything around me has to be in place and in an orderly fashion. Elika Gibbs, who runs a company called Practical Princess, organises all my wardrobes, and also archives my pieces that I would like to keep for long term.

Everything is colour coordinated, with its own section.

All the shoes that I wear everyday are available and at hand on display and all my old shoes are stored in shoe boxes with a Polaroid of each on the box for easy future reference.

Like every woman, I still have my favourites.

Leather and Lace: Who does it better, Choo or Valentino?

December 21, 2010 Designer, High Heels, Leather, Shoes 1 Comment

I’m sure it was purely coincidence that both the Jimmy Choo Nexus Snakeskin and Lace Sandals (left) and the Valentino Studded Lace Pumps (right) both showed up on Net-a-Porter’s new arrivals page on the same day, but their timely advents made it impossible for me to not compare them. I know which one I like better; do you?

Although the Jimmy Choo option tried to reel me in with exotic skin, and despite the fact that I’m generally a bit bored with Valentino’s lace-bows-studs gimmick, I can’t help but choose the Valentino pumps. The shape and material are so staunchly ladylike that the studs on the patent trim are an actual surprise, and the bow doesn’t seem out of place on this design like it does on many of the bow-decked Valentino pieces I’ve seen in the past couple of months. Both options seem overly expensive for what you get, but I guess that could be said of most of the shoes we feature here.

Buy the Choos via Net-a-Porter for $1295.
Buy the Valentinos via Net-a-Porter for $995.

10 ways to keep wearing high heels

December 21, 2010 Foot Care, High Heels, Tips No Comments

A  pair of high-heeled shoes has been a woman’s trusted friend for hundreds of years. Women usually wear heels to give height and style to their appearance. Even a pair of jeans and t-shirt can take on an entirely different look when paired with stilettos.

Women who wear high-heels every morning may be suffering from back and foot pain due to the pressure on the balls of their feet and consequently a strain on their lower backs. Even worse, the pressure on feet from prolonged high-heel use can actually destroy the structure of your feet. While for high-heel beginners, difficulty walking while on tip-toe can affect balance and lead to painful falls and leg sprains.

Today’s woman needs to be on her feet for work, family and social life, making high-heeled shoes not particularly convenient. Yet they still come under the pressure of the media, models and celebrities living life in high-heeled splendor. Women need to know that they can still enjoy the heel-appeal through adopting certain precautions and undergoing some specialized treatments.

1. Finding the best-fitting shoe possible. Buy the right size, ensuring that there’s a thumb’s width between the longest toe and the front of the shoe, to give the toes room to move. For heels, this means one may need to go up a size to get a comfortable fit.

2. Tailoring the width: Sometimes the toe isn’t the problem–it’s the width. Many fashion shoes come in a standard medium width. But if you have wide feet, then medium-width shoes are probably going to cause discomfort and, in the long run, hurt your feet permanently. If the heels you buy are leather, head to a cobbler (yes, they still exist). Often a cobbler can actually stretch the shoes to widen the toe box, enhancing the comfort of the shoe.

3. Cushion, cushion, cushion: While a full-shoe insert can help, if you suffer from pain in the balls of your feet (for example when the heels are particularly high and thin) or maintain a lifestyle that requires you stand in heels for hours, then it is definitely time to invest in silicon pads, especially in where your shoes come with less-than-adequate cushioning.

4. Wearing thicker heels for stability. A thicker heel will give better balance and may help relieve some pressure by distributing the weight on the foot more evenly.

5. Opting for open-toe high heels. Open-toe shoes help relieve pressure on corns and calluses. According to the branch manger of shoe and bag chain Tata Tio at Rehab Mall, women can really make use of open toe shoes as they are fashionable this season.

6. Buying heels with cushioned soles. Most high quality high heels are blessed with cushioned soles. In fact, this style of shoe is highly advisable, as the cushioned sole levels the front of the shoe to almost the same height of the heels, making the shoe highly comfortable.

7. Sticking to round toes. According to Tata Tio’s branch manager, lucky for us round-toed shoes are back in style this season. A glance at other shoe stores around town will prove that pointy-toed shoes are on their way out of fashion, which is a plus–pointy toes can wrench your big toe inward, causing joint pain. Round-toed shoes allow your toes to lie flat and spread out naturally.

8. Alternating shoe height. Wearing heels for many days in a row can make your feet feel ravaged. To maintain some comfort, switch between heels and a flatter pair of shoes. Although heels elongate your legs when you’re wearing a skirt, they are less important when you are wearing trousers, so give feet a rest on those days.

9. Seeing a podiatrist. Have corns and calluses professionally removed and dealt with by calling a podiatrist. A doctor can also advise you as to the problems causing corns and calluses–although his advice may be to stop wearing heels!

10. Keeping in shape: Last but not least, keeping proper posture, exercising and yoga may help avoid and get rid of back pain. An added benefit: Staying at a healthy weight will take some pressure off your back and feet.

Undergoing specialized foot treatments can also alleviate the negatives of wearing heels. According to the Natural Care Spa Brand Manager at al-Sagheer group, women can book a number of different foot curing treatments that use products made from natural ingredients.

- Spearmint Foot Pack: A deeply effective foot-care product, the spearmint foot pack uses white clay and peppermint to relieve stressed feet, resulting in a calming and cooling effect.

- Foot Bath Salts: This invigorating foot bath salt with its sea salt crystals and hibiscus extract stimulates circulation and has an enlivening effect on the legs and feet.

- Parafin Wax Treatment: Warm paraffin therapy has several benefits, among which is that it is considered to be one of the most effective methods of delivering heat to aching, stiff joints. It works by warming up cold feet, especially in winter.  It opens pores and increases circulation in the skin while relaxing stiff muscles by reducing tension.
